        THE TRUTH ABOUT BATS Cuestionario
      • Phrasal Verbs

Look at these two sentences from the video:

This fungal infection causes bats to wake up while hibernating during a winter.

White-nose syndrome has wiped out entire caves full of bats, with a mortality rate that can exceed 90%.

It is often possible to understand what a phrasal verb means by looking at its particle. In this case, up indicates an upward movement and out, disappearance.

      • UP

Apart from its general meaning of in an upward direction, the particle up has other meanings:

        1. With verbs of movement: approach.

In these cases, up is frequently followed by the preposition to.

        Some examples:

COME UP - DRIVE UP - GO UP - MARCH UP - RUN UP - RUSH UP - SAIL UP - SWIM UP - WALK UP

        2. Completion

        Compare:

You'll never get rich if you don't save.

They have saved up enough money to go for a holiday. (Here up implies that the saving is complete enough for a definite purpose.

        Examples:

FINISH UP - DRINK UP - BURN UP - DRY UP - TEAR UP - SAVE UP - CUT UP - WASH UP - FILL UP - SHUT UP - USE UP - SWEEP UP

        Other examples are:

WIND UP - PACK UP - WRAP UP - BUTTON UP - DO UP - TIE UP

In this last group you form the opposite with un- (and without the particle up), e.g. untie, undo, etc.

In the video Ms Hood says:

It can be like guilting a friend into spending time with you or sneaking a peak at your partner's texts or shaming a child for their lack of effort at school.

We use like in different ways:

'What's she like?' 'She's very kind and patient.'

        - to say that something is similar or the same.

        She looks like Billie Eilish.

        - to give an example.

Some names, like Pat or Alex, can be used for boys and girls.

        We use as:

        - to make comparisons.

He's not as tall as his brother.

        - to describe a job or role.

She's working as a web designer at the moment. (=> she is a web designer).

        Compare:

        I work as a psychologist. (=> I am a psychologist)

Like a teacher, I work with all sorts of people. (=> my job is similar to a teacher's job, but I'm not a teacher)
